About the event

MoCo's 8th annual observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance marks the 20th anniversary of the Remembering our Dead Project started by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in 1998, which remains critically important -- as are other projects that track transgender murders worldwide. Please join other members of the community as we memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice -- centering the experiences of trans women of color, who continue to be targeted in our community, country, and world.

We have heard and agree with community feedback regarding the presence of supportive police officers at this event. We are beginning a conversation with both the Montgomery County Police Department and the Rockville City Police Department about making this event feel safe and welcoming for all.

There will be speakers, music, and refreshments – plus quieter spaces with listening companions. Donations to support a local organization that does critical work for the trans community will be encouraged, but not required.

  • The event is free, but donations are invited*
  • Garage and street parking available
  • Rockville Metro stop (Red Line) & buses
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Armless and moveable chairs
  • ASL interpretation upon request
  • This is a designated safe space

Co-sponsors include:

ACLU Maryland, Montgomery County Chapter

Maryland Trans* Unity

MoCo Pride Center

Montgomery County, Maryland Office of Human Rights

*Generous donations collected for the Transgender Day of Remembrance will first be used to cover the cost of the event. Remaining funds collected will be provided to a local organization committed to work for the transgender community.
