MoCo Pride Center announced today an effort to help provide safe transportation for some attendees of the MoCo Pride Party on Saturday, June 29, 2019. Due to recent deaths and violent attacks on the DC-area's trans and queer community, MoCo Pride Center has purchased a limited number of vouchers to and from MoCo Pride Party via Uber. These vouchers can be claimed by attendees who do not feel safe getting to and leaving from the event through public transportation.
The effort was put into place to ensure that attendees who fear any threats or violence because of who they are or how they present themselves are able to safely get to and from the event. Specifically, this would mean members of the trans and non-binary community, but it is open to any identity if they have any fears from transportation. "We felt it was important at this time given the recent attacks and tragic deaths of trans women of color in the DC area that we make this happen," says MoCo Pride Center's Chair of the Board of Directors, Ezra Towne, "It is important to the success of our MoCo Pride Party that everyone who wants to attend can do so and that they feel safe."
Attendees who request a voucher will receive instructions to obtain one (1) voucher on Uber that is good for two rides on June 29 and covers 75% of their trip fare (up to $20 max) for each ride. A limited number of vouchers are available, thus vouchers will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have any fears on your transportation to and from the MoCo Pride Party, please do the following by 2pm Saturday, June 29:
Send an email to pride@mocopridecenter.org with the word "VOUCHER" in the subject line and request a voucher
If you just need a ride home from the event due to transportation fears, please visit the Info Booth at the MoCo Pride Party and ask a MoCo Pride Center staff member if any are still available
